About PowerSki Lab

Hello, I'm Dr. Sungchul Yang

Skiing has been my whole life — as an athlete, a scholar, and a teacher.

I began as an alpine ski racer, competing and standing on national podiums before taking my passion abroad. In Canada, I spent years training and earning my professional credentials, coaching at the Whistler/Blackcomb ski school and racing club. I hold CSIA Level 4 and CSCF Level 2 certifications, along with ISIA Level 4 and KSIA Level 3.

But I wanted to understand skiing more deeply — not just how to do it, but why it works. So I returned to study, earning a master's and a doctorate in sports management from Korea University.

Today, I bring those worlds together. I'm an associate professor in the Department of Sports & Technology at Seokyeong University, and I serve as chair of the academic committee at the Korea Ski Instructors Association (KSIA). As an FIS Alpine Technical Delegate (one of only sixteen in Asia), I also work at the international level of the sport I love.

What I'll be writing about

PowerSki Lab is built on a simple idea: real experience, explained through science. Here's what you'll find:

  • Ski technique — how to move better, safer, and more efficiently on the slope, explained through sports science instead of guesswork.

  • Ski gear — honest, practical looks at equipment: what actually matters, what doesn't, and why, from a biomechanical point of view.

  • Biomechanics — the "why" behind every turn: how the body, forces, and the mountain interact, and how understanding that makes you a better, safer skier.

  • Knees & rehab — protecting the body that makes skiing possible, drawn in part from my own long journey through injury and recovery.

  • Sport business & marketing — the business side of sport, from fan engagement to sponsorship and sustainability, grounded in research and real-world experience.

A life across the sport

Over the years, my work has spanned the full spectrum of skiing and sport:

  • Coaching — from everyday skiers and young athletes to fellow instructors, including serving as a national team coach for para-alpine skiing ahead of the PyeongChang Winter Games.

  • Research — publishing peer-reviewed studies in sports science, from ski-instruction media to winter-sports injury patterns (for which I received a Best Research Award).

  • Sharing — through the "PowerSki" video series, my YouTube channel, and columns in national media, I've spent over two decades making ski knowledge accessible.

Why this blog

I've also lived the hard side of this sport — serious knee injury, surgery, and the long road of rehabilitation. That experience shapes how I write here.

I believe both experience and evidence matter: a story gives meaning, and data gives trust. Whether you're a first-season skier, a competitive athlete, a fellow instructor, or simply someone who loves being active, my hope is that something here helps you ski smarter, stay healthier, and enjoy your sport for a lifetime.

A quick note: anything I share about injury, health, or recovery reflects my own personal experience — please consult your own doctor or specialist before making health or training decisions.
